What is First Mover Advantage?
First-mover advantage is the advantage gained by the initial
owner of a market segment. First-mover advantage can be instrumental in building
market share. It's absolutely true that nothing can make up for first-mover
advantage, and the proof is that Yahoo! remains where it is today and eBay
remains where it is, despite the entry of many other companies in the same
market segment.
The usefulness of first mover advantage needs to be judged in the context of the
product, program or business in the industry concerned and the actual and
potential competition.
If there are network effects (how much of an advantage it is to contact and
notify an established members base) enormous benefits can be obtained.
First-mover advantage is not just about getting there first: speed is necessary
to success, but not in itself sufficient. The advantages of being first must be
consolidated with resources – money, people and knowledge – to enable the
advantage to be maintained and enlarged upon.
An old business may be established and secured, but you will not have the first
mover advantage. Regardless of what others may say, being at the ground floor of
an INTERNET MARKETING OPPORTUNITY is important. Look for a business that is
relatively new, look for those owners with a good track record of fast growing
and aggressive marketing. You will then have the opportunity to piggy back on
the growth of the business. You can grow with the business! If a business is
already established in more than 100 countries worldwide, the opportunity to
have the first mover advantage is no longer available. But it can be of a great
advantage if you can help expanding a business worldwide and be involved in the
market opening in other countries.
